The colossal squid weighing half a ton which was caught recently may be headed for the microwave oven. But hey, this giant squid – the largest ever caught at sea – won’t be cooked. Researchers will just defrost it so they can study the sea creature better.
The squid is now in the possession of scientists from New Zealand’s national museum. Experts say the giant creature weighed 1,089 pounds and measured 33 feet long and may even grow up to 46 feet long. It is said to be the biggest specimen of Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni or colossal squid ever caught.
A giant microwave oven is now being considered by scientists as a more effective method to defrost the squid for further study. Defrosting this rare deep sea creature at room temperature will take several days with its outer part most likely to rot while the inner part remained frozen.
The colossal squid can go down deep into the sea to 6,500 feet. This giant squid, if insured, will be worth millions of dollars.
